As you may know, cannabis is federally classified as a Schedule I drug, making it part of the same category as heroin. However, cannabis has still managed to make its way into the medical field and in recreational shops in certain parts of the country.
The state of Wisconsin has yet to catch up with a large portion of the country that has decided to legalize marijuana in some capacity. Here’s what you should know about Wisconsin’s weed laws:
The Legality of Weed in Wisconsin
Using cannabis is largely illegal in Wisconsin, except for the limited use of cannabidiol (CBD) oil for medical use. However, the 2018 election illuminated just how popular the idea of legalizing marijuana is in the state. More than 60% of voters in Milwaukee and Dane counties favored legalizing, regulating, and taxing weed.
There are dedicated stores for CBD oil in Wisconsin, and there are quite a few to choose from. The Controlled Substances Board regulates the shops that are allowed to sell the substance under Wisconsin’s Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS).
Who May Use CBD Oil for Medical Purposes
Wisconsin law dictates that individuals with a medical condition can possess and consume CBD oil. However, the legislation is vague regarding which medical conditions apply to the rule.
One way to be safe from the law is to obtain a certification from your doctor declaring that you may possess CBD oil for treatment and that the CBD oil has no intoxicating impacts.
The law that allows you to carry CBD for medical purposes results from Senate Bill (SB) 10 that passed during the 2017-2018 Wisconsin Legislature.
